Why We Sleep?

We spend over a third of our lives sleeping, but why? Here we cover the function of sleep as a biological necessity for our bodies.

How Sleep Works

Sleep is the interaction of two biological processes. We use this two-process model to understand how sleep works. The interaction between these two processes impacts how we perform mentally and physically throughout the day. In this chapter we explore these two processes and uncover why some of us are morning larks and others are night owls. Which one are you?

What is “Good” Sleep?

We've all heard that adage that we should be getting 8 hours of sleep a night, but is this backed up by science? Find out what actually constitutes 'good' sleep and the true benefits of getting a good night's sleep.

Consequences of Poor Sleep

Many of us have experienced pulling an all-nighter or the sleep deprivation associated with having young children, but have you ever considered the impact this had on your body, brain, memory and decision making. Discover the impact of poor sleep through a fascinating case study from the past and more recent studies from sleep scientists.

Sleep in Modern Society

Technology, our 24-hour society and artificial light all have an impact on our modern day sleep habits. What should we be aware of and what changes can we make to maintain healthy sleep habits for ourselves and our families?

Optimising Sleep

Like most things in wellbeing there are no ‘quick wins’ when it comes to sleep, but here we cover the fundamental practical sleep optimising hacks we can all implement for a better night's sleep. Put these rules into practice regularly and consistently to achieve your best sleep.
